At the age of 80, Linwood Riddick recently graduated from South Carolina State University, earning his Bachelor of Arts in Music, fulfilling a promise he made to himself years ago.
Riddick’s journey was not without its challenges. After putting his education on hold to serve in the military, he faced the additional obstacles of segregation, according to WIS-TV 10 anchor Billie Jean Shaw. However, he never gave up on his dream. He promised himself that one day, he would walk across that graduation stage.
For years, Riddick kept that promise by driving 45 minutes each day to attend class, all while being an active member of the university’s choir. His perseverance paid off when, during the graduation ceremony, he received a heartfelt standing ovation from his peers and faculty.
“Mr. Riddick, you inspire us all,” the announcer said as he received his degree.
